New SDC/GI-NET President’s visit to East Africa
Last week Save Darfur Coalition and Genocide Intervention Network announced former Congressman Tom Andrews as president of the newly-merged organization. Tom and SDC/GI-NET policy analyst Dan Sullivan then flew to Nairobi, Kenya, to begin a two-week long trip to meet with genocide survivors from Rwanda, community leaders in South Sudan ahead of the country's independence, and survivors of the 2007 election-related violence in Kenya. They hope to establish relationships with civil society leaders and take home lessons from past outbreaks of violence to apply to our work in Darfur and the new South Sudan. As the pair travel, they are posting updates on the trip via their twitter feeds, which are being reposted on the Save Darfur twitter profile. To follow their progress, you can follow Tom at @TomHAndrews or Dan at @EndGenocideDan or view all their tweets on Save Darfur's twitter account at @SaveDarfur. Above you can see a short video detailing the pair's travels so far.
On Saturday, July 9 South Sudan will gain independence from Khartoum. Dan and Tom will be marking the occasion by answering questions posed by grassroots activists like you on the situations and people they have encountered as well as what you can do to help. To submit a question, visit this survey. Tom and Dan will be answering your questions via Twitter on Saturday, so subscribe to their feeds to see whether your question was selected.
Throughout their trip, Tom and Dan will be updating activists back in the United States on Save Darfur's blog at blogfordarfur.org. Check back frequently for updates!
